Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Cause Trees to Fall Across Singapore
On Tuesday, September 17, Singapore experienced severe weather with strong winds and heavy rain, leading to reports of fallen trees in various areas, including Bishan, Yishun, and Xilin Avenue.
A Bishan resident described the sudden onset of the winds: “It started without warning. Objects like shelves and unsecured items were blown around. Many people took cover in nearby shops as it became unsafe in the open corridors.”
At Raffles Place, debris, including broken glass, was seen on the road outside UOB Plaza 2. According to a statement from UOB, the damaged glass canopy was not part of their building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the affected area was quickly secured.
The Meteorological Service Singapore had earlier issued a warning, indicating that monsoon conditions would persist for the next two weeks. It forecast Sumatra squalls bringing heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in the pre-dawn and morning hours on some days.
Additionally, the latter half of the month is expected to see increased rainfall, with widespread thundery showers anticipated on most afternoons, some of which may be heavy.
